Modo’s support plays a key role in driving the success of events like Feast of Fields. Their member-owned, co-operative approach to car sharing is rooted in environmental stewardship, equitable access, and strong local ties across British Columbia. We spoke with Modo to learn more about their mission, the benefits of car sharing, and the exciting work they do in the community.

What inspired Modo’s mission, and how has it evolved over the years?

Modo started as a thesis project in Vancouver in 1997, with two cars and a few members. Now, we are proud to have more than 1,000 cars all across the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, and the Okanagan. We have always been about affordable and accessible transportation that minimizes environmental impact and changes the way people look at their daily transportation, and that is still our mission to this day. Over the years, we have expanded our fleet, providing a variety of cars in different locations.

What are some of the biggest benefits members experience when they join Modo?

When you join Modo, you join a community of people who care about their impact on the planet and who feel responsible for their environment and community. We are proud to have members who get involved with their communities and share that with others. You get access to lots of different cars, with a responsive fleet team that genuinely cares about your experience. We also offer lots of partnership perks with our partners to Modo members.

What are some common misconceptions people have about car sharing?

Generally, people assume car sharing is not sustainable, is expensive, or does not make a difference. Those are not correct! As a Modo member, you do not need to pay for gas, insurance, or maintenance, and you also get parking privileges. Booking is very easy using our app, making it a seamless experience. Most personal vehicles sit idle 95% of the time, costing people up to $10K a year. For every Modo vehicle in use, 9–13 private cars are removed from our streets. Car sharing is shown to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% to 50%. These are some of the great impacts that car sharing brings.

Can you share a story or example that illustrates the impact Modo has had on members, organizations, or local communities?

At Modo, we value helping our communities thrive. That means we provide support to nonprofits, local organizations, queer communities, arts and culture organizations, and other co-ops by providing them with car support. That means helping them transport equipment, team members, and more which helps them make an event happen! We have also had members celebrate great moments in their lives in a Modo, like getting married!
