Federal Election 2025 - Bringing Food to the Democratic Table

The world around us is changing rapidly – from climate change to geopolitical politics and everything in between. What never changes is our need for food. In the flurry of activity that leads up to each of us exercising our right to vote, it can be challenging to ensure that this most basic of needs is integrated into the public dialogues that are so vital to our democracy here in Canada.

We each have an opportunity to integrate food into the larger political process around us. It is easy since policies on food can be found in many different government branches, from those that foster healthy people, environment, and watersheds to those that enable safe and efficient movement of food across our landscapes to our larders.

You may have your own urgent issue related to food, and there are resources to assist in bringing your food issue to the public debate, connecting with candidates, and offering tools for how to effectively communicate. Here are some of the many offerings that address policy about how food is produced, who gains access to it, and the larger ecosystem and social justice impacts:

From Election Promises To Making It Real: Building Resilient Communities Through Food Systems Policy

FarmFolk CityFolk developed a Policy Brief, in collaboration with the Institute for Sustainable Food Systems at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, for the 2024 provincial election. The campaign dust is long settled, but the challenges and very real opportunities of creating equitable, accessible, sustainable, and viable food systems throughout the province remain. We believe that just and resilient ecosystems and food are central to achieving a range of vital public needs for community well-being, prosperity and resilience. Our Policy Brief is still relevant and offers a set of policy recommendations to help achieve these goals. As eaters, farmers, and residents of BC, we can continue to engage with decision-makers to advance compelling policy proposals for building resilient communities across British Columbia.
