Matthew is a farmer, researcher, and articling agrologist with seven years of experience working in agriculture. He is the Manager of Land Stewardship at the Sandown Centre for Regenerative Agriculture on traditional W̱S͸ḴEM territory in North Saanich, BC where he is responsible for developing and coordinating a restoration and stewardship plan for the wetlands, forests, and meadows of the land.

Matthew is a PhD candidate in Environmental Studies with the Ecogastronomy Research Group at the University of Victoria. His research focuses on the benefits and challenges of more ecologically-oriented forms of agriculture and combines field trials at Sandown with farmer interviews across the Capital Regional District of southern Vancouver Island. He holds a BSc in Global Resource Systems from the University of British Columbia and an MSc in Earth and Environment from Wageningen University and Research in the Netherlands where he focused on biological soil quality and ecosystem restoration.

Matthew has worked on farms in Haida Gwaii, Vancouver Island, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Saskatchewan as well as forestry in Iceland and northern BC. He is drawn to community-oriented work and is particularly fascinated by the connections between wetland restoration, crop-livestock integration, and agroforestry. Matthew is honoured and excited to share his passion for land care and food systems with the Board of FarmFolk CityFolk.
