This is a recording of a field day at was hosted in September in the Comox Valley, BC.
Lentelus Farms is a mixed livestock and grain operation on Vancouver Island and Kelowna. With 150 acres of land, they create riparian buffers and grassland set-asides, cover crop all of their fields every winter, produce most of the feed for the animals on the farm, keep their animals on a 1km diet, and manage an on-farm breeding program.
Their cover cropping program uses cover crops as part of a winter wildfowl habitat program on the lands leased from Ducks Unlimited Canada. With a majority of their fields planted as permanent grass stands now, they have 20 acres of cropland in cover crops which are on their vegetable and grain rotations using cover crop seed grown on the farm. This fall, they are planting in rye and tillage radish to naturally break up compaction and reduce their tillage program going into spring 2023. Their cover cropping schedule largely depends on what crops they have planned for the following year.
