Water is the Foundation of All Life

It is more than a truism that water is life. Farming in our province relies on it, whether through precipitation or irrigation. Persistent droughts and atmospheric river precipitation stress and threaten our food systems.

There are many ways that we can all contribute to ensuring that water is available and serving the many humans, wildlife, ecosystems, businesses and livelihoods that rely on water for life. Indigenous Peoples have long been leaders in respectful water relations and protection. For example, the Syilx Okanagan’s Water Declaration elaborates on core beliefs, responsibilities, and the nature of their interdependent relationship. And the hereditary Chiefs of the Gitksan created a watershed authority, based on their own laws and jurisdiction to protect the fish and lives that depend on healthy waters.

The provincial government also offers important information related to water relations and use. Knowledge of the drought level in any given region can help to motivate and guide use and conservation that is better matched to larger watershed needs and availability. The Ministry of Agriculture has a host of resources to help those growing and raising food.

At local and regional levels, many local governments and agencies, such as the Capital Regional District, the Okanagan Basin Water Board and the Regional District of East Kootenay, offer resources to their residents on how to protect and conserve water, providing information aligned with current needs. The Cowichan Watershed Board, a collaboration between the Cowichan Tribes First Nation and the Cowichan Valley Regional District announced in 2010, demonstrates the value of bridging cultural differences and creating effective co-governance practices for the sake of a thriving watershed.

Let’s all work together to care for BC’s water – our very lives depend on it!
