Recapping This Year’s Seedy Saturdays and Sundays

Posted on Monday, 10 April 2023 under Stories

Our BC Seed Security Team has been thrilled to attend several Seedy Saturdays and Sundays this year. We love talking with people about seeds, whether they are garden-curious and just getting started, or seed-saving experts that we can learn something new from.

Here is a brief recap of some of the seedy events we attended:

January 14th – Saanich Seedy Saturday

One of the earliest Seedy Saturdays took place on a sunny day in January at the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific. There was a lineup to enter for the entire event but the gardens and the beautiful space were a nice place to be. A great way to start off the season!

February 4th – Qualicum Beach Seedy Saturday

This Seedy Saturday was packed with over 3200 participants! We had a lot of interest in our programs and seeds that we sold for the BC Eco Seed Co-op.

February 11th – New Westminster Seedy Saturday

This Seedy Saturday launched the official opening of the New Westminster Seed Library located at New Westminster Public Library. There were three presentations throughout the day including a talk on container gardening by Carole Forsythe, beekeeping and pollinators by Matt Young, and a seed-saving workshop from our Metro Vancouver coordinator Siri van Gruen. The seed table was buzzing all day, kids got the opportunity to plant bean seeds, and many folks got their gardening questions answered at a Q&A.

February 25th – Salt Spring Island Seedy Saturday

A packed house with a diversity of seed growers, gardening workshops, and a very well-run and engaging seed swap table. We stuck around for an extra day to deliver a workshop to farmers about variety trials, increasing seed production, and farmer-led breeding projects.

March 11th – Kamloops Seedy Saturday

The Kamloops Seedy Saturday was buzzing with excitement for the upcoming growing season with lots of enthusiastic folks visiting our booth and the BC Eco Seed Co-op seed stand. Educational groups, local growers and local food producers came together to create a fun event for all ages.

March 12th – Kelowna Seedy Sunday

Hosted by the Kelowna Master Gardeners Society, this busy event had a diverse array of vendors and multiple local seed growers including Sunshine Farms, Laughing Swan Farm and Mojave Kaplan.

March 18th – Pender Island Seedy Saturday

A small but mighty Seedy Saturday, with delicious food and a great turnout on another beautiful sunny spring day. Lisa gave a talk on seed security with curious kids and lovely seedy conversations.

March 18th – Hastings-Sunrise Seedy Saturday

A beautiful day spent outdoors at Burrard View Park talking to gardeners and seed savers. There were tons of seeds, transplants, and cuttings to share, everyone went home with something exciting to plant.

March 19th – Duncan Seedy Sunday

We were welcomed into the space by Della Rice-Sylvester, a Cowichan elder, setting the tone for a beautiful day. It was a great day of seeds, smiles and seedlings held by cute kids in wool sweaters to welcome the spring.

March 23rd – City of Victoria Seed Swap Social

So much fun trading and swapping seeds with lovely folks at Crystal Pool.
