Pro-D Day at Butler Urban Farm

Our Thompson Cariboo BC Seed Security Program Coordinator joined Farm to School BC and the Kamloops Food Policy Council for a teacher professional development day at Butler Urban Farm in Kamloops.

Butler Urban Farm is a food commons where anyone can get free fresh produce. Their website describes that “No one who shows up at the farm looking for free produce is turned away empty-handed.” This initiative, supported by the Kamloops Food Policy Council, has made a sizable contribution to help ease food insecurity in the community.

The professional development day provided teachers with hands-on learning experiences for curriculum-based food literacy activities to do with their students. Topics included weeds, vermicomposting, seed starting in the classroom and making wildflower seed bombs. The sessions included lesson plans and many low cost options for the activities to reduce barriers for teachers.

Teachers in BC can explore Farm to School BC’s Spring Learning Activities for some great ideas and resources for outdoor activities with students from K-12.
