Recently at Lohbrunner Community Farm we had our annual Potato Planting Party with the local Royal Bay High School. Farmer Diana of Lohbrunner and Chef Rowan of Royal Bay coordinate this event each year, in which the culinary class comes from the high school – which has an excellent culinary program and runs the Ravenous Cafe – come to the farm to plant potatoes, which they will then harvest the following fall for use in their kitchen.

Along with planting potatoes, there are stations where the 40 or so students in grades 11 and 12 plant other vegetable seeds, plant a pollinator garden, learn about compost, or learn about nutrition and how it relates to where your food comes from.

As Lohbrunner Community Farm sells produce to the kitchen in the early spring and then again when classes resume in the fall each year, this is a fun and engaging event that helps the students to connect with the source of some of their food, and gain an appreciation for the hard work that goes into growing and harvesting it – and who knows, maybe it will get a few more young people hooked on organic farming as a viable career option for the future?

Many thanks go out to Farmer Diana and Chef Rowan for planning this event each year, and also the many co-op members who volunteer their time and expertise to make this event a huge success!
