Harvesting Carrot Seed

Posted on Thursday, 26 October 2017 under Canadian Organic Vegetable Improvement

As we harvest carrots from the BC Seed Trials we are still processing carrot seed from UBC Farm and the Sharing Farm. Although harvested over a month ago, the seed still needs to be processed to ready it for sale and planting. The seed dried down in the seed greenhouse at UBC Farm, but with the change in weather they umbels absorbed moisture from the air, making them hard to process. So now I have another new living room project at home – drying carrot seed! They dry down quickly once inside, allowing the seed to easily separate from the umbels. Once separated we can use hand screen to do a final clean on the seed. We may even be able to use the Office Clipper to clean some of this carrot seed!
